January 14, 2022

Dear Families,

This weekend is a special one to all of us here at CWS. When Jean Finnerty and I co-founded CWS over 28 years ago, we did so on the ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr. These revolutionary ideals of freedom, equality, mutuality, respect, racial justice, grassroots organizing, and advocacy are echoed in our school hallways everyday and are the fundamental basis for all we do. You and your family are vital members of our community, and I value you. Thank you for sharing these ideals with us.

While we cannot have our big annual auditorium-packed Honoring the Dream event this year, each class will be doing a skit and/or sing during community meetings through February. These will be recorded and posted on Bloomz each week, resuming next week.

The incredible work of our students and teachers may be featured on Monday, January 17 between 4:30 and 7pm on NY’s ABC7 Eyewitness News. I will send a link to the piece once it is available.

As a reminder, in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr., the progress we have made, and how far we have to go, there is no school on Monday, January 17.

For today, I hope you will enjoy this video c.2013 from our fifth graders entitled Raise Your Voice viewable here.

 Now for the COVID updates:

  • Please, keep testing your child every Tuesday and Thursday at the LabQ vans (unless they have had confirmed COVID within the last 90 days). The PCR results are consistently coming back within 24 hours now.
  • If you receive at-home COVID tests from school due to in-class exposure, you must administer these to your child on the night they are sent home as well as day 5 after the latest day of in-class exposure.
  • If your child’s teacher is offering asynchronous learning due to quarantining/isolating students and chooses to open this to other students remaining home in their class, these students will not be marked absent if they are doing the work and attendance question from the teacher.
  • Please Bloomz message me with any positive test results from any source (at-home, LabQ, etc.—we do not get results sent from LabQ directly).

 Wishing you a restorative weekend.

Warmly,
Maria
